Craniosacral Therapy, How Does It Work?

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is an effective remedy used in treating a number of ailments, injuries, and conditions. It involves a hands-on approach aimed at releasing tensions deep within the body. The treatments offer relief from pain and dysfunction, therefore improving whole-body health and wellness. CST is being used more as a preventive health measure because it gives the body the ability to increase its resistance to disease.

An Innovative Pioneer

Developed by Osteopathic Physician John Upledger. For years he studied and researched while serving a s a professor of bio-mechanics and Michigan State University. During a neck surgery in which he was assisting, he observed movement that would become known as the craniosacral system. He discovered that a soft touch no greater than 5 grams of pressure could release tissues surrounding the central nervous system.

The Mechanics Behind CST

The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system which supports proper body function. The craniosacral system influences the central nervous system. It consists of membranes and fluid surrounding and protecting the brain and spinal cord.

Daily stresses cause the body to strain, thereby creating tightened and distorted tissues within the craniosacral system. The result is tension around the brain and spinal cord which can create a barrier to the health of the nervous system.

The practice involves a light touch used for evaluating the craniosacral system by gently feeling body locations. The CST practitioner tests for ease of motion and rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid pulsing around the brain and spinal cord. The light touch is then applied to release restrictions in tissues that are influencing the craniosacral system. This all serves to normalize the areas around the brain and spinal cord, encouraging the body’s self-healing ability.
